Do you find that you gain more weight in periods of time you’ve been eating far too much bread? Then you have a realisation and catch yourself on?
There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that it’s probably NOT the bread making you fat. Grains are actually supposed to be pretty healthy, full of fibre, help control blood sugar levels and aid digestion. In saying that, 5 different types of bread can affect your blood glucose levels in 5 different ways. A slice of brown Brennans be good bread likely won’t have the same effect as a piece of thick cut hovis white bread. This will be due to the GI factor but that’s not for this post. Basically, bread isn’t bad for you. It won’t make you fat (unless it doesn’t agree with you, bloats you badly and makes you look pregnant in the short term, then it’s bad for you).
The bad news…. eating bread until it’s coming out your ears will probably put you in a calorie surplus(more than you need to maintain your weight), thus making you gain weight. It can be the butter, the mayonnaise, the chicken tikka sauce that you never even think about, having a detrimental effect to your calorie count. Eating too much bread can mean a deficiency in other things like protein and healthy fats such as omega 3. Too many baguettes means less chance of getting all your essential vitamins and minerals to keep you thriving.
Basically, don’t victimise the bread, enjoy it, but in moderation. Variety is king. Stick to the lower calorie breads if you’re trying to lose weight, and be mindful of what you put into it.
