Is Cardio Or Strength Training Better For Fat Loss?

by | Feb 23, 2022

The thought of doing cardio makes many people feel instantly sick 🤢 it takes you back to high school and doing the cross country or the beep test, not too many of us enjoyed doing that.
But what exactly is cardio?
Cardio refers to cardiovascular training, in other words, challenging or working your cardiovascular system. It’s a form of exercise that gets your heart rate elevated, your lungs pumping beyond a resting level and increases the blood flow around your body. It’s recommended that we all do at least 30 minutes a day, this is aimed at keeping us healthy, but it can also be a very useful tool for fat loss.
Cardio can come in many, many forms :
Swimming 🏊‍♀️
Running 🏃‍♀️
Walking 🚶‍♀️
Cycling 🚴‍♀️
Hiking 🏔
Hoovering/Cleaning (if you’re going hard enough at it 😅)
Is it better than strength training for fat loss?
What is strength training?
It’s training to get stronger, simple. It generally consists of using resistance training, both lifting weights of some description and/or using your own body weight to get some stimulus through your muscles. Our body is very smart, after we use a muscle and break it down at a tiny micro level, our body rebuilds it, improves it and thus we get stronger if we do this consistently and progressively.
Why strength train? 🏋️‍♀️
Strength training has many benefits from lifting groceries from the car to the house, a bag of coal, kids/grandkids, all the way to injury prevention in sport, improves performance in sport, building lean muscle tissue and helps you look well. BUT, will it help you lose weight?
If body composition is your goal, strength training is just as useful of a tool as cardio, but shouldn’t be used instead of cardio, it should be a happy marriage of sorts, maybe more like a love triangle once we get nutrition into the picture.
What you eat, the calories you consume and your energy intake will generally be the NUMBER ONE factor for fat loss. It’s mighty hard to out train poor eating habits.
Truth be told, a good healthy, nutritious diet in a calorie deficit paired along with a mix of BOTH cardio and strength training will get you the best results! 🎯
